Environmental plantings forcarbon and biodiversity

Environmental Plantings

Establish permanent native forest for biodiversity, land value, and carbon credit income.

Transform underused areas into resilient, productive landscapes by establishing permanent native forests through environmental plantings.

This method generates Australian carbon credits while restoring biodiversity and strengthening land value.

Well suited to cleared areas, including marginal or less productive land, that have remained cleared for at least five years and are suitable for revegetation.

Key benefits

Key benefits

  • Increases biodiversity by establishing diverse native habitats above and below ground across landscapes.
  • Provides shade and shelter for livestock, improving welfare and productivity year‑round on farms.
  • Improves soil health through deeper root systems, organic matter, and better structure.
  • Reduces erosion by stabilising soils, slowing runoff and protecting vulnerable ground over time.

Environmental plantings draw atmospheric CO₂ into permanent native forests, creating Australian Carbon Credit Units while delivering long‑term, regulated carbon income linked to enduring land‑use change.

Protecting Koalas From Extinction

Our flagship Koala Friendly Carbon Initiative

Koala Friendly Carbon is a large‑scale nature repair initiative restoring critical habitat while permanently storing carbon in new native forests.

To date, more than 500,000 native food and habitat trees have been planted across 764 hectares of previously cleared land in New South Wales.

Our ambition is to regenerate 10,000 hectares of koala habitat, storing up to 8 million tonnes of CO₂ in permanent forests.

The initiative is certified by Accounting for Nature and supported by the NSW Government, demonstrating strong environmental, social, and cultural integrity.

Restoring critical habitat

Restoring critical habitat

Koala Friendly Carbon is delivered by Climate Friendly in partnership with WWF‑Australia to protect east‑coast koalas from extinction by restoring connected, resilient habitat across privately owned land.

We work hand‑in‑hand with land managers, First Nations groups, and local communities to grow habitat for koalas and other threatened species.

Projects generate high‑integrity Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), providing land managers with a financially viable pathway to repair nature at scale.

Eligibility
Find out more about eligibility and what’s involved
Every carbon farming method has specific eligibility criteria and requires some changes to land management to deliver measurable outcomes. These will vary depending on your property, current practices, and the method that best fits.
Eligibility depends on factors such as location, land history, vegetation, and current management practices
Projects typically involve adapting or enhancing existing practices to store carbon or reduce emissions over time
Participation is designed to work alongside your broader land management and business goals
Each method has defined requirements, monitoring, and reporting obligations under regulatory frameworks
Our specialist team will work with you to assess suitability, explain requirements clearly, and guide next steps
You don’t need to work this out alone, we’ll help you understand what’s possible and what’s involved before you commit. For more detailed information, read the full method factsheet: Environmental Plantings Factsheet
