Tetra Pak taking action on climate change.
How GoldPower works
GoldPower is the world's first global renewable energy label. GoldPower comes from renewable energy projects in countries without a national REC system. The projects can include wind farms, hydro-electric plants, solar farms and other sources of renewable energy. GoldPower guarantees that the renewable energy purchased provides new and truly additional renewable energy and therefore reductions in carbon emissions. It also delivers significant, verified social and environmental benefits to the local community. These benefits can include health, employment and education, as well as new infrastructure like power and roads.
How GoldPower helps Tetra Pak to meet its climate goals
To help achieve the company's overarching goal to cap emissions at 2010 levels by 2020, Tetra Pak sources GoldPower to match some of the electricity consumption of its operations. As a growing number of sector leaders are aligning their climate targets with science, there is also growing awareness that more investments in new renewable energy infrastructure are needed in order to keep the global 2°C emissions pathway within reach.
Tetra Pak's GoldPower commitments in 2014
Changbin and Taichung GoldPower Wind Project
Renewable Energy purchased 4,754 MWh
GHG emissions saved 3,671 tCO2e
Shuangliao GoldPowerSolar Project
Renewable Energy purchased 2,496 MWh
GHG emissions saved 3,601 tCO2e
Balikesir GoldPowerWind Project
Renewable Energy purchased 2,908 MWh
GHG emissions saved 1942 tCO2e
The benefits for Tetra Pak
Since 2010, Tetra Pak has sourced 69,508 MWh of GoldPower to reduce its operational emissions from electricity consumption by 50,525 tCO2e. Demonstrating leadership in managing climate impact while supporting local communities is at the core of Tetra Pak's sustainability strategy. With GoldPower, Tetra Pak is actively supporting communities in developing countries through projects that build infrastructure and also help address issues including poverty, unemployment, lack of education and poor health.
How Tetra Pak has helped the development of GoldPower
In 2010 Tetra Pak was the first industrial company to embrace GoldPower renewable energy. Thanks to the
support of Tetra Pak and other early adopters Climate Friendly has been able to continually increase the scale of GoldPower and to improve its methodology, quality assurance process and tracking system. It is fair to say that Tetra Pak's renewable energy leadership has catalysed the development of GoldPower, enabling Climate Friendly to now offer it to a much broader range of corporate climate leaders.
